Height and Distance of the Dining Table Light
Height and Distance of the Dining Table Light: The Right Measurements
For an 80-cm-wide dining table, the bottom edge of the dining table light should ideally hang 70 cm above the tabletop; depending on the table width, ceiling height, and personal preference, a height of 60 to 80 cm is appropriate. In terms of length, the lamp should end at least 15 cm before the edge of the table on each side; for tables 180 cm or longer, it should end at least 20 cm before the edge.
Key Points at a Glance:
- Height (bottom edge): approximately 70 cm above the table (as a guideline).
- Range: 60–80 cm, depending on the table width, ceiling height, and personal preference.
- Cooking island or counter: 75–90 cm above the countertop.
- Light fixture length: at least 15 cm shorter than the table at each end; for tables 180 cm or longer, at least 20 cm shorter.
- Mounting: height-adjustable, so you can fine-tune it to fit your own desk.
This guide covers the dimensions. The overview “Which Lamp for the Dining Table?” explains which type of lamp is suitable, as well as the light and material options.
How high is the lamp hanging over the dining table?
The correct height depends on the width of the table, not its length. The reason: The light should illuminate the entire width of the table, and the higher it hangs, the wider the beam of light spreads outward. At the same time, it must not hang so high that the light source is in the field of vision of those seated and causes glare. The correct height lies somewhere between these two points.
For a standard table width of 80 cm, the bottom edge should ideally hang 70 cm above the tabletop—the best compromise for most people between full illumination and glare-free light. If your table is wider, you can raise the light fixture to up to 80 cm, thereby widening the beam. For low ceilings or if you prefer a particularly cozy atmosphere, 60 cm is also a good choice. Within this range, personal preference is the deciding factor.

Hang them lower or higher—what effect does that have?
You can control the mood by adjusting the exact height: when hung lower (about 60–65 cm), the light creates a more intimate and cozy atmosphere, which works especially well with low ceilings. When hung higher (up to 80 cm), the light spreads more widely and illuminates a larger portion of the room. In both cases, it’s important that the light source isn’t directly in the line of sight of those sitting there.
Height for high ceilings and long tables
The ideal height is always measured relative to the tabletop, not the ceiling—so the value does not change in rooms with high ceilings. It’s important to have a height-adjustable suspension system that allows you to position the light precisely (our models are adjustable for room heights of up to 3 m). For long tables, a single, appropriately long light fixture provides the lighting: it creates a continuous band of light without any dark spots in between.
How far from the edge of the table?
The lamp extends slightly beyond the edge of the table on each side: at least 15 cm, and at least 20 cm for tables 180 cm or longer. This ensures that no one’s head will bump into the lamp when sitting down or standing up, yet it still doesn’t look too small in relation to the table.
There is also a limit on the bottom: If there is 25 cm or more of free space on each side—or even 30 cm or more for tables 180 cm or longer—the ends of the table will no longer be adequately lit.
How long should the light fixture be?
The distance from the edge of the table directly determines the appropriate length of the light fixture:

A single light fixture of the appropriate length is preferable to several small pendant lights: It illuminates the table evenly, avoids shadowed areas between individual light sources, and requires only a single mounting point. It also creates a much calmer look over a long table.
What if my table is a non-standard size?
The table covers the most common table lengths. However, many dining tables fall in between—165 cm, 190 cm, 210 cm—or are custom-made by a carpenter. In those cases, no standard length fits exactly, and this is where the most common mistake is made when buying lighting: You grab the next best length off the shelf, and it ends up being 20 cm too short.
The downside is this: Once you've hung it up, you can adjust the height and brightness at any time—but not the length. That's the only decision that's final.
Because we craft each lamp individually in our workshop, the length isn’t a catalog specification—it’s based on your specifications. You tell us the length of your table, and we’ll determine the appropriate lamp length and find an oak branch that meets those dimensions. You can read about how this works under “Custom Manufacturing.”
Measuring Height Accurately: A Practical Tip
Test the height before shortening the cable —preferably with a partner: One person holds the light fixture while the other sits down to test it and checks the line of sight and lighting effect. Only once the height is correct should you make the final adjustment to the cable. Since sensitivity to glare varies from person to person, this step is especially important in the range between 70 and 80 cm.
Frequently Asked Questions
How high is the lamp hanging over the dining table?
For an 80-cm-wide table, allow about 70 cm between the tabletop and the bottom edge of the light fixture. Depending on the table width, ceiling height, and personal preference, a distance of 60 to 80 cm is recommended.
How low can a dining table light hang?
At least 15 cm at each end; for tables 180 cm or longer, at least 20 cm. If more than 25 or 30 cm, respectively, remain unlit, the ends of the table will no longer be adequately lit.
How far should the lamp be from the edge of the table?
The light fixture remains 25–40 cm inside the edges of the table and does not extend beyond the edge.
How many lights should hang over a long dining table?
As a rule, a single pendant light of sufficient length is sufficient. It provides even lighting over the table and prevents dark spots between multiple individual lights.
How high should the light fixture be hung above a kitchen island or counter?
Slightly higher than a kitchen island or counter: 75–90 cm above the countertop.
