What kind of light fixture should I put over the dining table?

Welche Lampe über den Esstisch?

A pendant light should be hung over the dining table: with its lower edge about 70 cm above the tabletop, at least 15 cm shorter on each end than the table, with warm white light (2,700–3,000 K), and a dimming function. For long tables, a single, appropriately long light fixture provides the lighting.

Key Points at a Glance:

  • Light fixture type: hanging pendant light
  • Length: ends at least 15 cm before the edge of the table on each end; for tables 180 cm or longer, at least 20 cm
  • Height: about 70 cm above the table; recommended range: 60–80 cm
  • Light: warm white 2,700–3,000 K, dimmable
  • Material: solid real wood, such as a natural oak branch

What kind of light fixture works best over the dining table?

A pendant light that directs light downward onto the tabletop is the best choice—it illuminates food and faces evenly. For long tables, choose a pendant light of corresponding length that illuminates the entire length of the tabletop. It creates a continuous band of light without dark spots between individual light sources and looks much more balanced over the table than several individual lights hung side by side. Ceiling spotlights or wall lighting alone are usually not sufficient for the dining table.

How big or long should the dining table lamp be?

The light fixture should end a short distance before the edge of the table on each side: at least 15 cm, and at least 20 cm for tables 180 cm or longer. This ensures that no one’s head will bump into the fixture when sitting down or standing up, and the fixture still won’t look too small in relation to the table. Conversely, if there’s too much space left—starting at about 25 cm on each side, or 30 cm for tables 180 cm or longer—the ends of the table will be left in semi-darkness. Two guidelines for reference:

Table Length Recommended lamp length
180 cm 120–140 cm
220 cm 160–180 cm

You can find the complete table for all table lengths from 160 to 240 cm in the guide “Height & Distance of Dining Table Lights.” You’ll find the right length among our handcrafted dining table lights —from compact to over 2.40 m.

If your table is between standard sizes or is a custom size, the lamp doesn’t have to be a random fit—it will be custom-made to fit. Since we craft each lamp individually, the length is tailored to your table: “Custom-made.”

How high is the light fixture?

The height depends on the width of the table: The higher the light is hung, the wider the beam of light spreads outward—but if it’s hung too high, the light source will come into your field of vision and cause glare. For a standard table width of 80 cm, the bottom edge should ideally be 70 cm above the tabletop. For wider tables, it can be up to 80 cm; for low ceilings or a particularly cozy lighting effect, it can even be 60 cm. You can read all the details in the guide“Height & Distance of the Dining Table Light.”

How bright, and what color of light?

Above the dining table, warm white light (2,700–3,000 K) creates a cozy atmosphere; a dimmable light fixture covers everything from cozy get-togethers to working at the table. The guide “Brightness, Lumens & Lux” explains how much brightness you need; to learn what matters when it comes to light color and color rendering, read “What Makes for Good Light?”

Can the light be dimmed or controlled via a smart system?

Yes. You can dim the LED strip models continuously using a touchless sensor dimmer, and the LED retrofit models using a wall dimmer compatible with LEDs. For integration into a smart home, we can equip the LED strip models with interfaces for ZigBee, Casambi, KNX, or DALI upon request.

What material and what style?

The style is what makes the light fixture the focal point of the room. Dining table lights made from genuine oak branches bring a natural touch to the table—each branch is one-of-a-kind and becomes an eye-catcher when illuminated by warm white LED light. Look for heat-treated, durable wood and a height-adjustable suspension system. Our dining table lights made from oak branches are handcrafted at our workshop in the Sauerland region.

The Light Fixture in the Room's Lighting Design

The dining table lamp provides task lighting above the table. When combined with general and accent lighting, it creates a harmonious space. The guide “Lighting Concepts for the Living Room and DiningRoom” shows you how to combine all these elements .
